ROBERT
ADAMS (born 1937)
Burning Oil Sludge. Boulder County, Colorado. 1974
Silver print, 1974, printed 1988, image 6 x 7-1/2 in. on paper measuring 11
x 14 in.
Robert Adams contrasts the mythology of the American West, its vast tracts,
its prairie grass and wilderness abundant for the pioneer, with the environmental
catastrophe wrought by the modern American Dream. The white snow and sky are
rent by the underground oil fire. The gentle panorama of mountains and clouds
is overweighed by the roiling thick smoke, the unhealthy blackness billowing
from the clean vista of the earth.
