A PAIR OF ALUMINIA CHARGERS (1904)
Faience, each 17-1/2" (44.5 cm) diameter, 2-5/8" (6.5 cm) deep
Fully marked on the reverse, with underglaze blue-green Aluminia marks, and
model/form numbers 199/300 and 200/300, respectively, indicating the year
1904-5, and other marks identifying the painter and potter.
These designs are by Christian Joachim (1870-1943), painter and ceramist,
who collaborated with silversmith Georg Jensen in a private studio and at
the 1900 World Exhibition, where Joachim was awarded a Grand Prix. In 1901
Joachim was appointed creative director at Fajancefabriken Aluminia, which
had acquired the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory in 1882 and launched
a reinvigoration under Harald Slott-Møller. Joachim's characteristic
style developed simplified, naturalistic forms and intense colors against
the ivory-white faience ground.
This pair of imposing chargers, paired by their consecutive model numbers and identical
creative marks, accordingly date from the birth of Danish modernism.
"We will not make porcelain or majolica, but our own faience: a type with
characteristics of our own nation." -- Christian Joachim
