The Red Badge of Courage

First edition, first issue. Octavo (18.9 x 13.3 cm overall, the pages 18.3 x 12.3 cm). Original decorated tan buckram covers, titled on spine in red and black and on upper cover in red and black with the red initial “T” framed with gilt design, top edges stained yellow, other edges rough cut, tan endpapers. In a felt-lined bookcloth-covered chemise and shaped brown pebbled morocco slip box (overall 20.5 x 15.2 cm) with red gilt-lettered leather labels. Collates [3 ll.], 1 l. (title recto, copyrights verso), pp. 1-233, [1 p.], 4 pp. advertisements, [2 ll.]. Printed on unmarked laid paper. The first advertisement page is headed "Gilbert Parker's Best Books," and The Red Badge of Courage is not listed. Undamaged type on page 225. Lower spine very slightly bumped, covers slightly stained, unobtrusive watermark on rear cover continuing onto spine, slight dampstains on margins of rear endpapers, sliver of upper corner pp. 27-8 missing (possibly original paper defect), in very good condition overall, the book block tight, the text pages very clean and bright. BAL 4071.

Provenance: Discrete contemporary bookseller’s label of McClelland & Co, Columbus, Ohio on upper left corner front pastedown; gilt initials “J.M.W.” (not yet identified) on inside lip of slip box.
