Pen and grey-brown ink and grey-brown wash, 38 x 27.9 cm (15 x 11 in.), signed and dated in a calligraphic flourish “hG London / 2 xo 21” lower right. On ivory laid paper with watermark of superimposed trefoil scrolls. Lightly skinned areas on margins verso from old hinges, professionally restored, otherwise in fine condition, clear and bright.
This robust yet lyrical drawing, resembling a Renaissance metalpoint, has a suppleness of line which recalls the influence of Matisse on the artist during his European flight from the prosecutions of his colleagues as anti-war radicals in America during the First World War.
