Rumal (square shoulder mantle), Dogra period, ca. 1870-5.
Bears inscription embroidered in white wool on black field center.
Woven, joined and embroidered wool field and embroidered border, approximately
6 ft. x 6 ft. (183 cm x 183cm)
This late Dogra period rumal (square shawl) is joined from myriad kaani-weave
pieces in red, blue, yellow ocher, violet, green, white and black fields,
stitched into the whole by the rafugar (joiner), whose intricate art is
now extinct. The entire shawl is extensively embroidered. The design elegantly
plays off the square against its diagonals. The merchant has embroidered
his marks and number in the central field.
From the textile archive of Jack Lenor Larsen, bearing a tape label sewn
on the margin with his archive number (710 1 L).
Overall good condition. Tiny patched areas of repair throughout, barely
discernible from the front.
