Moses SOYER (American, 1899-1975)
Study Portrait of a Young Woman

Oil on canvas laid down on board, 8 x 5-7/8 in. (20.4 x 15 cm), signed “MSOYER” (center left edge) and dedicated “TO JOE HIRSHHORN A TRUE FRIEND AND A REAL LOVER OF ART” (upper edge), in a gilt frame 12 x 9-3/4 x 1-3/4 in.

In overall fine condition, the old varnish yellowed, some surface soiling.

This undated study bears resemblance to Girl in Orange Sweater, 1953, Whitney Museum of American Art (inv. 54.5), with the model’s penetrating gaze, half-shaded face, shadowed eyes and slightly skewed shoulders.

Provenance:
Joseph H. Hirshhorn (collection label, inv. no. JH.424 on back of frame), bequeathed 1966 to The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (inv. no. 66.4702 on back of frame), deaccessioned 2009.
