The second of the Storytellers Series issued by Yolla Bolly Press in 1989-90. Prospectus: "In this unusual book, one of our most celebrated poets and publishers tells us, in short stories, of the coming of literary age of a young writer in the decade before World War II..... In his early days he, too, joined the seekers in Paris, this collection of early stories is a fictional record of his search.... This collection, previously published only in The Harvard Advocate and Story magazine, is a fond reminiscence, an unusually guileless look back at a formative time -- for this writer, and for modern America as well."

FISHER, M.F.K. (Mary Frances Kennedy)
Boss Dog
Covelo: The Yolla Bolly Press, 1990

First edition. Octavo (the book 10-1/4 x 7-5/8 in. overall). No. XLVI of 65 in boards, signed by the author, of the entire edition of 255 copies. Pale yellow bookcloth covered boards, front cover embossed in blind with decorative geometric design, endpapers printed with decorative geometric pattern in three colors. In a slipcase covered with white India straw paper, decorative printed title on spine. Collates [2 l.], 5 ll. (half-title, title, contents, etc.), 104 pp., 1 l. (colophon), [2 ll.]. Prospectus laid in. Fine.

The third of the Storytellers Series issued by Yolla Bolly Press in 1989-90. Prospectus: "An American single mother spends a year in Aix-in-Provence with her daughters, eight and eleven. Soon after their arrival, they fall in with a café mongrel whose autocratic air inspires the children to call him "Boss Dog." Partly fantasy, probably mostly autobiographical (Fisher did spend a year in Aix with her daughters), this collection of six witty and delightful tales is the chronicle of a year of travel adventure in one of France's most beautiful cities.... And throughout, their lives seem strangely linked to the Boss Dog. Precocious, curious, and energetic children; loving, indulgent, and somewhat distracted mother; competent, aloof, and ubiquitous dog: the escapades of this expatriate family and their canine hero are touching and hilariously funny. Vintage Fisher."

DOERR, Harriet
Under an Aztec Sun
Covelo: The Yolla Bolly Press, 1990

First collected edition. Octavo (the book 10-1/4 x 7-5/8 in. overall). No. XLVI of 65 in boards, signed by the author, of the entire edition of 255 copies. Burgundy bookcloth covered boards, front cover with gilt Aztec sun design, colored endpapers and preliminary leaves in five colors of the Southwest, with color letterpress and decorations. In a slipcase covered with handmade brown paper, decorative printed title on spine. Collates [2 l.], 5 ll. (half-title, title, contents, etc.), 96 pp., 1 l. (colophon), [2 ll.]. Decorative chapter headpieces, section dividers and tailpieces by Karin Wikström printed in color. Fine.

The fourth of the Storytellers Series issued by Yolla Bolly Press in 1989-90. Five short stories (four first published here) and a preface set in villages of Northern Mexico, the sixth story in a California seaside town. "Consider This, Señora," the lead story, became the keystone of her second novel, with the same title, in 1993. In this octogenarian collection following Stones for Ibarra (1984, National Book Award) Doerr is the understanding and compassionate yanqui whose grasp of people and the cadences of language is entrancing.
